For eight years, I've actively taken part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, a tribute to my grandparents, Anabelle and James. These two remarkable individuals played a crucial role in shaping the woman I've become today. Some of my most cherished memories are of my grandma, singing "Here Comes the Sun" as she went about her day, and the adventures with my grandpa waking up early and taking remote controlled electric boats by the pond behind their condo, even though we weren't supposed to be there and chuckling when we’d get called out by the neighbor across the pond.
However, life took a bittersweet turn as we began losing them long before we physically lost them. Alzheimer's gradually transformed their identities. Amidst fading memories and confusion, there were fleeting glimpses of hope when a familiar song by Frank Sinatra played or a loved one entered the room, only to be stolen away by the relentless grip of the disease. Through it all, we stood by them, offering support through every stage of their journey but with that, I wish for a world where no one has to witness their loved ones slip away into a state of fear and uncertainty, robbed of their being right in front of their eyes.
Alzheimer's is a cruel adversary, one that has fueled my determination to be an advocate for life. In my lifetime, I aspire to see a world where no one else has to endure the heart-wrenching suffering caused by this ruthless disease.
