The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter Hosts the Third Annual African American Conference

Release the Silence: Our Voice, Our Power, Our Community

Peoria, IL – May 17, 2025 – The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is proud to announce Central Illinois’ Third Annual African American Conference, Release the Silence: Our Voice, Our Power, Our Community

This free, community-centered event will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM (Doors open at 9:00 AM) at Life Together Center, 3625 N Sheridan Rd, Peoria, IL 61604

The conference will provide a platform for crucial conversations led by Carl Hill Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion officer, Association staff, healthcare professionals, caregivers, volunteers, and advocates.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore topics ranging from new treatments to addressing disparities affecting the African American community from financial planning to providing care for loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The event will be filled with invaluable insights and resources, empowering participants with the knowledge and tools needed to make a difference.

"The Alzheimer’s Association is dedicated to fostering spaces where listening comes first. By hearing directly from community members and caregivers about their needs and concerns, we can better understand how to take meaningful action in serving our communities," said Jacob Lehr, Program Manager of the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2024 Facts and Figures Report, African-Americans are about two times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other dementias compared to white individuals. However, the underlying reasons for this increased burden remain unclear and require further research. This event is designed to support the Black and African American community in navigating the complexities of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregiving. Whether you are currently a caregiver, preparing to become one, or a healthcare professional, this conference will provide valuable resources, support, and insights to help you on your caregiving journey.

What to Expect:

  • Inspiring Talks: Hear from experienced caregivers who share their personal journeys and insights.

  • Helpful Resources: Learn about various resources available for caregivers and families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

  • Support Networks: Connect with others who understand your challenges and share advice and support.

  • Vendors: Meet vendors who specialize in services for caregivers and dementia care.

The conference will feature a wide array of community partners including Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging, Health Alliance, and our Conference Planning Committee made up of local leaders, health care professionals, and caregivers. Their collective efforts aim to provide the Black and African American community with essential tools for caregiving and promote open discussions around Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
