Why I Volunteer for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Volunteering has always held a special place in my heart. I genuinely enjoy giving my time to help others, and the feeling I get from doing so is indescribable. It’s that fulfillment that inspired me to get involved with the
Walk to End Alzheimer’s cause that truly opened my eyes to the impact of a disease many people don’t fully understand until it hits close to home.
Alzheimer’s is real. It doesn’t discriminate, and it has the power to affect anyone. That’s why I believe raising awareness is so important. While there may not be a cure yet, education and early detection can make a big difference in managing symptoms and improving quality of life. This is what drew me in and why I continue to push my friends and family to get involved.
A Personal Connection Through Hospice Work
Although I don’t have a family member with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, I’ve come into close contact with it through my work as a hospice volunteer. Being around individuals living with dementia is both eye-opening and heartbreaking. It’s also a strong reminder of how vital proper care and compassion are during such a vulnerable time in someone’s life.
A Journey Just Beginning
I began reaching out to get involved with the Walk last year, but unfortunately couldn’t attend. Even so, I stayed connected because I knew that both volunteers and awareness were still very much needed. This year, I was thrilled to dive in more deeply and do my part to support the mission.
A Full Circle Moment
One of my favorite memories from volunteering with the Walk was returning to my high school to recruit student volunteers. Watching these teens show genuine interest and curiosity was incredibly moving. It reminded me of myself at that age—eager to help and eager to learn more about health care. It was a full circle moment that left me inspired and hopeful for the future.
Why I Keep Walking
For me, the most rewarding part of being involved with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is knowing that the resources and information shared through this event are changing lives. I firmly believe that if you have the ability to make someone’s life a little easier, why wouldn’t you?
Walking in Glenview
I’m proud to be a part of the Glenview Walk team and to continue supporting this important cause in my community.
Looking Ahead
As I grow in my role as a volunteer, I hope to be able to bridge gaps for people who may face language or cultural barriers when it comes to understanding Alzheimer’s. Everyone deserves access to information and support, and I’m committed to helping make that happen.
Being part of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than just showing up for an event—it’s about standing with those affected, educating others, and building a more compassionate future. And that’s something I’ll always be proud to be a part of.
Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Find your Walk today at www.alz.org/walk
